Ashoka And Buddhism

Ashoka the Great: greatest of the emperors ever born. We have so many names in human history as emperors. But Ashoka was different: Different from all others. Because, what he had done, no other emperor had done that ever.
His last war – the war of Kalinga, changed his entire being from a cruel warrior to a merciful and compassionate king. The Kalinga war was one of the bloodiest wars in world history. There were nearly 250,000 people killed! It is said about the Kalinga war that the river Daya near Kalinga turned red because of the bloodshed. After seeing such bloodshed Ashoka changed. He understood the worthlessness of such a war for winning small pieces of lands.
He saw this ‘war’ not from his eyes because his eyes had never felt any compassion for anyone. He had seen this war from the eyes of Buddha. And, this made him change. Now, compassion touched his soul. He decided not to fight again. He decided to rule his state as a compassionate king.
Buddhism gave him the distance, that he became able to watch his own thoughts.
A distance is created between him and his cruel thoughts, between him and his cruel personality and curtain of cruel thoughts were now nowhere – a new being has arisen from Ashoka. He realized his real being which was compassion, which was peace; not war.
