Man And The Island
There is a small island in Japan (As shown on Discovery channel). The island is special as it has habitation but no human resides there except one. He was shifted there, about twenty years back, when he was only twenty-three years old. From that time till now he is residing there and as no other person lives there and the island is not in touch with the outer world, the person has to look after his fooding, lodging etc., by his own and by the things available at the island. Obviously, he is living naked. For many years nobody knew that there is a man living on this island. But, one day a group of some media reporters reach there to make a report over the island and surprised to look a man residing there. So, they decided to take an interview with the man. He initially resisted but finally got ready to give the interview. So, following are questions and answers-
Reporter: For how many years you are residing here? Are you a resident of Japan?
The Man: Around 20 years and yes I am a resident of Japan.
Reporter: But, why are you living here if you can live in Japan?
The Man: Yes I can live in Japan but I love this place.
Reporter: How did you reach here and why are you living here?
The Man: I was residing in Japan. I had a beautiful family with my wife and a kid. One day I fought with my wife and decided to leave my family and go to some other place to live. I hire a boat and reached this island. It seemed to be like heaven, so beautiful. I decided to reside here.
Reporter: But is it easy to live here and what you eat? Is this island has enough to fulfil your needs?
The Man: Yes initially I find it difficult. I ate fish, crabs and some vegetarian food available. But slowly I realized that the need for food can be easily fulfilled at the island as everything is available here. So food had not remained a problem. After some days I searched a shelter also in the form of a wooden hut which I made after one month of reaching to this island. So now food and shelter is not a problem.
Reporter: So, what do you eat now and isn't it boring to live here alone?
The Man: Initially I ate fish, crabs as well as some vegetarian food but now I eat only vegetarian food. And living here can't be boring. There is so much to do. It involves my whole day to arrange for my food. And there are so many things to watch. I think the civilized world is boring, here life is full of adventure.
Reporter: Isn't it dangerous to live here alone? Do wild animals never disturbed you?
The Man: No, life is not dangerous, as wild animals are never interested in eating humans. Every wild animal has his own choice of food and a wild animal can attack a human only in the condition of either it feels unsafe in presence of human or in the scarcity of food. This is my understanding which I have gained after living for so many years into this wild island.
Reporter: You said that now you are a vegetarian now, so any specific reason for that?
The Man: Yes, living here, on this island, I watched the animals grow in front of my eyes. I have watched the babies of tortoise, see them getting out of the eggs and growing in front of my eyes. So I started loving them. And how can you kill someone you love. So I stopped killing. Now I can't kill even insects. The only thing I kill are the mosquitos, and for that, I would say that I am trying to become resistant to kill even mosquitos but it is somewhat difficult.
Reporter: Have you never wanted to go back to your house in Japan? Do you want to meet your family?
The Man: Yes, I love them, but I don't want to go back. If somehow they can meet me here, I am ready to meet.
Reporter: This area is prone to earthquakes like dangers also, so how you protect yourself in such a condition.
The Man: Earthquakes etc. are more dangerous in your civilization. Here there are no buildings or bridges or concrete structures that can make it dangerous to live here. Here earthquakes are normal, nothing to fall because of an earthquake. And more than that when you are close to nature your ability to smell danger increases and that ability protects you.
So, the above was the interview I watched on the Discovery channel. After watching this man I realized how Mahavira and Buddha changed living so many years into the forest. I got an answer that how they became so much non-violent. I also remember that when the tsunami struck Andaman and Nicobar islands the tribes living there, who lives naked in these modern days, untouched with the effects of civilization, were remained least affected by the dangerous waves and surprisingly no casualty took place. They remained safe. Somehow they managed safe rescue as if they knew that tsunami was going to come. So, what I want to say or observed that the civilization has done some harm to human being and that harm is in the reduction of his ability to get connected with nature and that's the main reason of so much depression in the modern world.
